Why Does My Child Lie and Steal Without Feeling Bad?:
How Mistrustful Children’s Brains Adapt to Protect Themselves and Frustrate Those Around Them

Join Jonathan Baylin, PhD for an all day learning workshop on trust building, trauma, and brain development.

This event is open to parents and students.

Dr. Baylin will focus the first part of the day on learning about the effects of early experiences on brain development. This part of the day will emphasize how early experiences with caregivers channel the development of the brain either towards trust-based strategies or mistrust-based strategies for living among other people. He will then present the concepts of Blocked Trust and Blocked Care to emphasize how children surviving through mistrust can often engender defensive reactions in adults leading to “mutual defense societies” within families.

For the second part of the day, Dr. Baylin will discuss ways to prevent or treat Blocked Care and to facilitate a child’s journey from mistrust towards trust using “enriched” relational processes to become “trust builders,” adults who can awaken the blocked potential for safe engagement with safe people. There will be an explanation in detail what he thinks neuroscience is telling us about how to be the kind of trustworthy adults these children so badly need in their lives to have a chance to change their brains and minds about themselves and relationships. You will then look at ways to strengthen the ability to sustain a caring state of mind towards children who unintentionally and mindlessly challenge our capacity to remain compassionate towards them.
