Deaf Mental Health specialization, and the reported experiences of Deaf or hard of hearing clients living in a ‘hearing-centric’ society, has the potential to support and reinforce cultural Deafness, or pathological ‘hearing impairment’. Deaf Mental Health encourages us to provide culturally affirmative mental health care, requiring that we first engage in an on-going examination of our personal identity referents, values, and worldviews; how they may shape our biases, perceptions of, and assumptions about our clients. With this cognizance of our own experiences and perceptions, we can then initiate an exploration with our clients about how their cultural referents inform their experiences and perceptions of themselves. The training will focus on how to ensure linguistically accessible communication with clients from diverse language, cognitive, and/or literacy needs. We will discuss how to achieve language and communication attunement with our clients when our primary language (usually English), is not the same as the primary language of our client; or when an individual’s neuro- and/or cognitive development present literacy challenges, requiring a communication approach that is specific to these differing abilities.

The training is April 30, 2019 from 9-2:45 at the RSS offices 30 Matthews Street, Goshen, NY 10924Space is limited so early registration is suggestedLunch will be provided!

The cost is $50 for 5 continuing education contact hours for social workers, mental health counselors, psychoanalysts, creative arts therapist, and marriage & family therapists. Full attendance is required to receive credit; variable credit for partial attendance may not be awarded based on State Board guidelinesWe apologize, but if you arrive late, please don’t ask us to make an exception and give you a certificate anyway. We have been told that the trainings will sometimes be audited and we can not risk losing our ability to give Continuing Education contact hours because you got there late. We have no way of determining who is and isn’t an auditor and do not want to take a chance. We are all professionals and getting there before the trainings start is what would be expected of any professional.
