Join us on Wednesday April 7^th for “Lessons on Language” with Dr. Anthony Dandridge

Please join Dr. Anthony Dandridge, professor of Black Studies at SUNY New Paltz, as we dive into the complex history of racism embedded within our language. 

Dr. Dandridge will first lead a short lecture on the ways language has been used a tool of oppression, as well as offer anti-racist alternatives to this language. The last part of this event will be an open conversation between Dr. Dandridge, AFFCNY staff and the audience on how racist language shows up as it intersects with adoption, and how we can support our families towards anti-racist parenting.

Audience members are encouraged to email sarah@affcny.org with questions they may want to ask Dr. Dandridge prior to the event, and are also encouraged to utilize the chat box as the live event unfolds.

Anthony Dandridge (ABD, Temple University) is an Africologist in the Department of Black Studies at SUNY New Paltz. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he taught for 13 years in the Philosophy Department at Temple University, and in in Temple’s Department of Africology and African American Studies, the first Ph.D.-granting department in the discipline of Black Studies in the world. Dandridge’s major interests revolve around African and African American Philosophy, a field with a vast history of engaging issues of race, religion, gender, environmentalism and justice, among other topics.

Return for the Follow Up “Language Workshop” with AGAPE Staff!

A hands on workshop where we discuss and practice what we’ve learned from Dr. Anthony Dandridge’s first event. These workshops will be led by AFFCNY’s Sharon Williams, director of our Hudson Valley branch and McDonald Morris, Central New York’s Youth Program Coordinator.

Using real life scenarios drawn from experiences of trans-racial adoptees, Sharon and Mac will discuss what these racialized moments have looked like, what impact they have had, and how we can move closer to anti-racist parenting. 

These events will happen back to back, during two consecutive evenings on Wednesday April 28 and Thursday April 29 form 6:30 to 8 PM.  Participants are not mandated to, but are highly encouraged to attend all three events for a thorough understanding of material covered.
