Lisa & Isell: A Story About Adoption and the Ghost Kingdom

“This is an extremely insightful and important documentary that highlights the failures of the adoption system and the trauma it causes whilst also showing the importance of having birth parents be apart of an adoptee’s life….how society often looks down upon or forgets birth fathers. Beautifully made video and beautiful, heartbreaking, and triumphant story.”

Adopted person and visionary producer, Angela Tucker, and her husband, two-time Emmy award-winning director Bryan Tucker , have done it again with Lisa and Isell; a Story About Adoption and the Ghost Kingdom.   In it, Angela tells the story of an 85 year old man, Isell, who has been searching for his daughter for 54 years. The unforgettable ending stretches the notions biological family, connection and belonging.

Lisa Marie Simmons was born in Colorado Springs (CO) and survived several troubled adoptions and foster homes. She found solace singing in her church choir and was featured soloist. At nineteen, Simmons moved to New York City to study theater and music and perform in various pop, funk, soul, blues and jazz bands throughout the Manhattan club circuit at night. “Music is my savior, and my past has taught me empathy,” she reflects.  In March 2021, one of Lisa’s essays was picked up and published by HuffPost, which led to Lisa’s televised interview on The Tamron Hall Show on ABC. Lisa’s essay Interracial Adoption for Beginners appeared in the compilation Chicken Soup for the Soul: I’m Speaking Now. Simmons was also commissioned to write “We’re Gonna Change It” for the non-profit Ampersand Families, which advocates for young persons in the US child welfare system.
