The Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) in partnership with the Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York is offering a full day training in Syracuse for certified and approved foster and adoptive parents.

Training Workshop Topics Include:

  • Navigating Relationships with Birth Families, Catherine “Kitty” Ravert, Family Support Specialist
  • Educational Advocacy, Susan Rausch, Family Support Supervisor
  • Self-care for Foster/Adoptive Parents and Kin Caregivers, Parent Panel
  • Supporting Adolescents Mental Health, Jennifer Cornish Genovese, ACSW, PhD
  • Starting or Funding a Parent Support Group, Amy Drayer AFFCNY

Plus Keynote: Stress and The Brain & Brain Architecture

This training will explore the impact trauma and toxic stress have on the structure and function of a child’s developing brain. Participants will also learn about the change in the production of and sensitivity to neurotransmitters. They will be provided with tools to help children heal from adverse histories. The Brain Architecture Game is a tabletop game experience that builds understanding of the powerful role of experiences on early brain development – what promotes it, what derails it, and what are consequences for the child. The game helps people appreciate the impact of early childhood experiences on outcomes across the lifespan.

Renee Hettich AFFCNY

Renee Hettich, LMSW is the AGAPE Central New York Director at the Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York. She earned a Master of Social Work degree from Marywood University and also holds a Master’s Degree in Audiology and a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech/Language Pathology. Since 2005, she has been a licensed master social worker in the field of adoption working with families formed through domestic and inter-country adoption. She has published articles in Adoption Today and Adoptive Families and is the author of the book “My Kids Know More Than Me! 15 Life Lessons from Foster and Adopted Children”. She was a foster parent and is now an adoptive mother of four children through inter-country adoption and one child through fictive kinship care.
