With a Presentation by Dr. Douglas Waite

Dr. Waite, in company with DDP Certified Trainer, Courtney Rennicke, Ph.D., and DDP Consultant Leah Crane, Psy.D., will hold a conversation about the use of DDP to support children and families managing the effects of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The speakers will also discuss the difficulty in diagnosis, and gaps in treatment and support. The afternoon will include presentations, case studies, and consultation. Attendees are encouraged to come with related questions about using the model in their practice.

By the end of this event, attendees will

Improve their understanding of working with children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and co-occuring Psychiatric Disorders.

Understand the impact of fetal alcohol exposure as a critical element of working with children in foster care and adoptees.

A recent NIH study (Prevalence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in 4 US Communities) found as many as 1 in 20 first-graders may be affected by Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

“These shocking findings prove that practitioners, public health professionals, policymakers, and the public need to wake up to this crisis,” said National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS) President, Tom Donaldson, “more education, more services, and better access to addiction treatment resources for women unable to stop drinking are urgently needed."

Please join expert Douglas Waite, MD for a presentation focused on improving our understanding of working with children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and co-occuring Psychiatric Disorders.

Session 1: October 19th, 2018, 9:30AM EST - 12:30PM EST

Session 2: October 19th, 2018, 1:30PM- 4:00PM EST

Session 1 is open to all participants, Session 2 is open only to mental health professionals.

About Doug Waite

Dr. Waite is medical director of The Keith Haring Clinic at The Children's Village, a community foster care agency and residential treatment center established in 1851. Dr. Waite holds an appointment of Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital and is a member of the board of directors for the National Organization for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the Child Welfare League of America and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), District 2.

He is a participant in two expert panels formed by the AAP, Center for Disease Control and US Administration for Children and Families to develop protocols for screening children in child welfare and the general pediatric population for fetal alcohol and drug exposure. He is board-certified in developmental-behavioral pediatrics, a member of the Society of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and was elected one of ten FASD National Regional Education and Advocacy Liaisons for the AAP in 2016.

Dr. Waite has special interests in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and the effects of child abuse and neglect upon child development and uses his time in clinical practice to teach medical students and residents to care for children in foster care and the juvenile justice system

Supporting your child through their sometimes difficult behavior to get them back on track to more socially acceptable behavior.

Concepts of self-care, figure out where your relationship with your child is blocked and how to deepen connections with them.

Open to all adoptive parents and relative caregivers who have guardianship of the child in their care.

Refreshments and childcare provided.
