With  Sheriff Timothy S Whitcomb, MS

We in the human service fields tend not to always see ourselves as protectors.  In our service to our clients, we can minimize and ignore how the impact that all of the vicarious trauma that we swim in, can impact our own health and wellbeing.  As both a law enforcement officer as well as a clinician, Sheriff Whitcomb is in a unique position to remind us of what we are really doing in our professional lives. Vicarious Trauma is not related to a geographical area, but a demographic one. Working with trauma survivors as a mental health professional can be very rewarding and inspiring, as well as often challenging.  This can place the professional at risk for vicarious trauma, and over time, symptoms of burnout.

In this dynamic, powerful, and emotional presentation, Sheriff Whitcomb will take participants through the what, why, and how’s of Vicarious Trauma, focusing on how self-awareness and self-care can be critical tools for building both inner resiliency and mitigating the effects of being in the “field of trauma” so that one may continue being in service for years to come.

The cost is $25.  There will be 3 continuing education hours offered for Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.
