A best practice training for child welfare professionals; foster and kinship caregivers

Kinship care is part of a continuum of options for children who are removed from their parents’ care. Our system is designed for non-relatives who make the deliberate, planned decision to become foster parents. The journey for kinship caregivers often begins with a surprise phone call.  Relatives, because of the very nature of their relationship and the way in which they become caregivers, need and deserve additional and different support and consideration.  Intra-family placements also pose special challenges for the adults involved – challenges our system needs to support.  This workshop looks at the kinship journey through the “system” and presents real kinship testimonials from across New York state.
