“The Adopted Life: Conversations with Youth about Race, Adoption & Identity”

The adoption experience is a multifaceted journey for the entire family, but it is often the adoptee who bears the brunt of navigating the complexity of the experience. This is especially true for adoptees of color adopted by white parents, who have different needs than their non-adoptive counterparts and are well-served by thoughtful attention to the intersectionality of race, culture and identity. Internationally-recognized adoption educator, Angela Tucker, who is also a transracial adoptee, will present video conversations she’s had with adolescent adoptees of color and highlight the stressors they experience and offer strategies for supporting them. Angela will be joined by a special guest; Isabella, a 17-year-old Guatemalan adoptee will join Angela and will share some of her own experiences. This interactive workshop will include a time of Q&A.

About Angela Tucker

Angela Tucker is the subject of the documentary, CLOSURE, the Founder of The Adopted Life and the Director of Post-Adoption Services at Amara.

Angela was adopted at the age of 13 months and raised by a Caucasian couple in a large, multiracial family in Washington State after receiving a diagnosis of spastic-quadriplegia, and being left at the hospital as a ward of the state of Tennessee. At the age of 26, her search for her birth-parents was featured in the groundbreaking documentary, CLOSURE.  Adopted from foster care in the state of Tennessee, under the terms of a closed adoption, CLOSURE follows Angela for two years during the search for her birth family.

In 2009, Angela began blogging as a way to process her emotions and experience as a transracial adoptee; a means by which she hoped to build a community of other adoptees growing up in closed adoptions. The Adopted Life blog offers unique perspectives and honest reflections on social justice and adoption-related news. An unabashed truth-teller and a tireless content creator, Angela is an internationally recognized thought leader on transracial adoption and openness in adoption. Angela is an inspiration and role model for adopted and fostered youth, at a time when positive, candid, insightful role models are greatly needed.

Angela’s and her husband, Bryan Tucker, an Emmy Award winning filmmaker, live in Seattle, Washington.
